Example of an art therapy session flow
1. Arrival & Orientation
Joint arrival in the room, brief exchange about mood, needs, and concerns. A calm atmosphere is created where the person can feel safe.
2. Introduction to the Topic / Impulse
A creative or thematic impulse invites one to engage in an inner process – e.g., an image, an object, a question, or a small perception exercise.
3. Creative Phase
The person works freely or guided with various materials such as paints, clay, pens, natural materials, or collage elements. The focus is on expression, not on a "beautiful" result. Anything is allowed to emerge.
4. Viewing the Created Work
The image or object is viewed together. Feelings, thoughts, and discoveries are carefully named – as much as the person wishes. Appreciation and curiosity are paramount.
5. Reflection & Integration
There is a discussion about what the creative process triggered, what new perspectives emerged, and how these impulses can be transferred into everyday life.
6. Closing Ritual
The session is consciously concluded – through a brief conversation, a small exercise, or a quiet phase. This allows the experience to resonate and "settle" well.
